Get The Curse music

This week’s podcast is brought to you by someone from a very special place for me, Singapore.

For a beginner, originating from a city or country (in this case, both) where the musical scene is tiny and has no international influence, sure doesn’t help getting attention from the right people and labels. It can be argued that when in this situation,  you’re only facing two possibilities : either move to London/Berlin, or work your ass off and make really good music.

Pulling this off does take time, though. About 6 years after he first started making music, Xhin self-released an EP in 2003 and an album the following year (which is now available here for free), and then waited three more years to be “discovered”, as they say. Meereestief from Germany invited him for a remix - which was his first big success as it was charted by top DJs all over Europe - and later an EP and an album. But more importantly, through Meereestief he met Lucy, who later founded Stroboscopic Artefacts and signed him for its second release. Since then Xhin’s name has appeared very often in SA’s discography, and it’s fair to say that he heavily contributed in defining the sound of what is now one of the best forward-thinking techno labels around.

As he is an accomplished sound designer by day, Xhin obviously used his professional knowledge in the process of creating his own music. And when you hear a track like “Blade Moth“, you’ve got to admit he did manage to develop an unmistakable sound for himself.

So here you go, exactly sixty minutes of cold, fast, banging techno, but not without a few welcome surprises : Yellow Magic Orchestra and… a ragga MC.

In addition, be aware that Stroboscopic Artefacts have just re-released their first two records, one of them being from our DJ of the week.

Être originaire d’une ville ou d’un pays (ici, les deux) où la scène musicale est minuscule et n’a aucun rayonnement mondial, voilà un sacré handicap quand on cherche à attirer l’attention des bonnes personnes et des bons labels. Dans cette situation, seulement deux choix s’offrent à l’artiste techno débutant : soit migrer à Londres ou Berlin, soit bosser comme un damné pour faire de la putain de bonne musique.

Cependant s’en sortir par cette voie peut prendre beaucoup de temps. Six ans environ après avoir commencé à faire de la musique, il a lui-même sorti un EP en 2003 et un album l’année suivante (désormais disponible gratuitement ici), puis a encore attendu trois années supplémentaires avant d’être “découvert”, comme on dit. Meereestief, label basé à Stuttgart, l’a invité pour un remix – son premier gros succès car le morceau a été joué par les plus grands DJ européens – puis un EP et un album. Mais au sein de Meereestief, il a surtout rencontré Lucy, qui fondera plus tard Stroboscopic Artefacts et le signera pour sa deuxième sortie. Depuis celle-ci Xhin figure très souvent dans la discographie de SA, et on peut affirmer en toute légitimité qu’il a largement contribué à définir le son de ce qui est maintenant un des labels techno les plus novateurs.

Comme il est un sound designer accompli de jour, on se doute bien que Xhin s’est servi des connaissances acquises lors de l’exercice de sa profession pour créer sa propre musique. Et à l’écoute d’un morceau comme “Blade Moth“, force est de constater qu’il a réussi à développer un son reconnaissable entre tous.

Voici donc soixante minutes pile de techno rapide, dure et glaciale, certes, mais où arrivent tout de même à s’inviter Yellow Magic Orchestra et… un MC ragga.
