DAVID BOWIE Let’s Dance
Extrait de Let’s Dance
(LP – EMI – 1983)
This was my first ever record! And, actually, not even a record, but a cassette I bought aged 7 with my first ever pocket money on a holiday in italy. I only found out years later that it was produced by Nile Rodgers and Giorgio Moroder!

PUBLIC ENEMY You’re Gonna Get Yours
Extrait de Yo! Bum Rush The Show
(LP – Def Jam – 1987)
I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard this for the first time. I was already seriously into hip hop, but this had a energy and production styles never heard before. Especially the hookline on “You Gonna Get Yours” fascinated me and I found out only much later that it was done with a 303.

A TRIBE CALLED QUEST After Hours
Extrait de People’s Instinctive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm
(LP – Jive – 1990)
My favourite hip hop album of all time sitting next to Digabe Planets debut and Gang Starr’s “Daily Operation”. It was the high times of the so called daisy age hip hop, a complete opposite of what was going on in the west coast hip hop full of bad attitudes and violence.

MY BLOODY VALENTINE Only Shallow
Extrait de Loveless
(LP – Sire – 1991)
I got this from a new class mate, that came from paris and was, like me, more alternative and a bit of a outsider in our class. And a shoegazer! Again, I couldn’t believe my ears when I stuck this in my walkmans and completely disappeared into my headphones. Sound design I never heard before, making walls of noise sound so beautiful. The single with Andrew Weatherall remix was the perfect middle ground to lead me into so called rave music later on…

ORBITAL Chime
Extrait de Chime
(12″ – FFRR – 1990)
My first ever techno record and thinking back, it is a very good one to start! I still play it occasionally. It is funny to see how my ears were trained after all these years, as I remember hearing it so differently back then, before I went to my first ever raves with the huge subwoofers and BASS!

APHEX TWIN Ptolemy
Extrait de Selected Ambient Works 85-92
(2xLP – Apollo – 1992)
A true classic! Funnily, I was learning to mix with this double album. I was dj’ing already before, but hip hop. And you mix hip hop very differently to techno records. But, instead of trying to beat mix, I was learning to fade the harmonies of Aphex Twin.

MAURIZIO Ploy (Strategic mix)
Extrait de Berlin 1992 Tresor Kompilation
(2xLP – Nova Mute – 1992)
It was this compilation and a article in ID mag that really got me interested in Berlin and its Techno scene. And looking back, what a compilation. Full of very influential and still relevant classics like Maurizio’s “Ploy” and “Der Klang der Familie”.

TERRY CALLIER You’re Goin’ Miss Your Candyman
Extrait de What Color Is Love
(LP – Cadet Records – 1972)
The oldest record in this selection, but obviously, I only found out about it sometime middle of 90’s. The most beautiful love songs of all time. A record you would want to take with you on a desert island and fly away with.

ULRICH SCHNAUSS Clear Day
Extrait de A Strangely Isolated Place
(LP – City Centre Offices – 2003)
Ulrich Schnauss is, alongside Aphex Twin, one of the greatest talents in experimental electronic music. He manages to find a excellent balance of uplifting and beautiful melodies without being cheesy. This is still my favourite album by him, though his other albums are all worth listening too!

A MOUNTAIN OF ONE Our Eyes
Extrait de Collected Works
(CD – 10 Worlds – 2007)
I’ve noticed that this is my most listened album on my player. It’s been the first choice on my headphones on holidays since 2 years now! A masterpiece!
