DoP Allo boom boom
Extrait de Between the blues EP
(Circus Company - 2007)
The last couple of years have been rich with horns, from Ricardo Villalobos’ sublime Rhythm & Sound remix to Kalabrese’s near-perfect “Auf Dem Hof.” Now come dOP with a contender for 2007’s best brass. Staccato horn-section samples spatter like pancake batter atop a rolling groove and buttery splashes of keys. Timbre and tension are the name of the game, as climbing fourths spin around like a modal merry-go-round.
SUN ELECTRIC Toninas (ricardo villalobos remix)
Extrait de Toninas (remixes)
(Shitkatapult - 2007)
Sun Electric’s Lost & Found: 1998-2000 came like a gift from a generous god; now Ricardo Villalobos gives even more with this 13-minute remix. (Did you expect anything shorter?) The original’s fizzy harmonic churn is sent spinning into oblivion as Villalobos explores perhaps his most frictive rhythms yet in a track that’s equal parts idyll and nightmare.

KABALE UND LIEBE Mumbling yeah
Extrait de Mumbling yeah
(Area Remote - 2007)
The first track on Remote Area’s Area Remote sublabel is quickly becoming nothing short of ubiquitous, but unlike so many anthems it refuses to wear out its welcome so easily. Whether that’s thanks to the unsettling, bare-bones drum track it’s based upon, or the uncanny and indistinguishable mutterings laid over the top-mumbling, yeah, indeed-is an open question. Bonus points for the most goosebump-inducing breakdown I’ve heard in months.
SHINEDOE Peacemaker (deetron remix)
Extrait de Sound Traveling
(100% Pure - 2007)
Deetron’s on fire lately; his recent remix of Legowelt’s “Disco Rout” is a masterpiece of arpeggiated intensity with gorgeous Detroit overtones. He pulls back on this mix for Shinedoe, streamlining the beat until it feels as smooth under the fingertips as the cymbals giving the track its sense of glide. Pointillistic keys provide the Motor City soul quotient, carrying it to a buzzing, brilliant climax.
BRUNO PRONSATO Slowly and Gravely
Extrait de Why Can’t we be like us
(Hello? Repeat - 2007)
Picking a favorite track off Bruno Pronsato’s forthcoming album, Why Can’t We Be Like Us, feels vaguely absurd; the whole album is a masterpiece of otherworldly sound design channeled into rippling motion. Pronsato has never sounded as focused as he does here: every centimeter of the track is filled with activity, but there’s no sense of clutter whatsoever. Loose, liquid beats-played, not programmed-give the track a sense of ball-bearing imbalance even as an alien melody grounds it in an unstinting tunefulness.
