Dusty Kid – Boxer Recording / Systematic

Classic question but still important. You are not that famous here in France so what did you do you before meeting success this year and even before the Duotheque project?

At the end of summer 2006 I decided to close the project Duoteque and to concentrate on my solo projects, that I have produced throughout the year. Duoteque success came pretty quickly and it was unexpected but, among other countries, France has responded really well to it so I hope now French audience can appreciate also the work by Dusty Kid

But does it mean Duotheque is over now?

Duoteque started as an experiment with my friend Andrea who has a musical background different from mine. It was a really stimulating experience that, as I mentioned before, has come to an end. The last release by Duoteque was LOGO, a limited edition one-sided vinyl

I feel that Tsunamy Ep really gave you a new dimension as a producer. A lot of people discovered your sound with this ep. Do you think there is a before and after Tsunamy?

It’s an EP that reflects me a lot. The A side is more is more techno oriented with the flavor of rave parties, the B side instead is more mental and introspective, less invasive and more melodic… a natural evolution of the Duoteque productions. I think there is no “before tsunami” or “after tsunami”…perhaps that would be only in the case of an album.
Your productions sound very acid and electro house and it is, in a way, completely different of the current “minimal” criterias. is it something you did intentionnaly? is it also something you did on purpose to have a sound very different of what you did with duoteque?

I was never attracted by “minimal”, especially now that has become a sterile and over saturated territory for 15 year-old kids; maybe in 2002 you could still find something interesting, but now (except for a few cases) every track sounds just like the others. It’s just not a sound that inspires me, too soft and lacking melody. I think it shows through my records, when a track doesn’t have a particularly present drumbeat, then it has a melodic element that makes it interesting. The minimal movement is what it is probably because of the easy access to the way it’s produced. Now, with a free software even my mother can do a minimal track. That is definitely a type of music for non-musicians, in the 90’s it was the big beat put together only with samples; in 2000 minimal has given the chance to express to all the producers that didn’t quite have a musical background. I think it will last no more than another year hoping that something more fresh and new will come along.

Even if your productions are different from a label to another one we can recognize your sound on every production of you. is there a style or a musical mouvement particuraly inspiring to you? where do you find your inspiration?

Even though I was born on the 80’s I lived the music scene very intensely, despite the fact I was just a kid. After a period dedicated to classical music that lasted until age 14 (coinciding with my studies at the conservatory), in the 90’s I’ve always been attracted to electronic music until ‘96 when the crossover between rock and dance arrived and blew me away.

what can we expect of dusty kid for the coming year?

I’m working on my album now. I’m 60% done and I’m having a lot of fun doing it because I have no type of pressure and there are already several labels interested in releasing it. It’s my very first LP and I think it will be very diverse, from the techno trains to the dreamy and melodic atmospheres. A sort of concept album in which I want to express my idea of rave, very close to the raves of the late 80’s, with hints of 70’s American folk and Detroit in the 90’s.
