Marco Rodrigues and Miguel Evaristo, also known as Photonz, are a DJ and production duo from the portuguese underground. They’ve been releasing on labels like Pilooski’s DIRTY, Dissident, Republic of Desire and Astrolab and also gathering recognition and respect from people like Ivan Smagghe, Pilooski, Mark E, Ewan Pearson, Tim Sweeney, Joakim, George ‘Micronauts’ Issakidis and Zongamin – all these, people who definitely know their stuff.
As many others, their DJ careers started modestly. Still in high-school and under another name, they grew their fame and style. They started to remix pop hits in order to liven up their own sets and, from these experiences, original tracks emerged. By staying out of specific genres or hype-based trends they managed to find their own sound in the process. This is why they still cite New Wave, Acid House, Krautrock, Minimal, Tropicalia or Drone as their influences.
Consequently, their tracks are clearly for the floor, reminiscent of the foundations of House and Techno, sprinkled with bits and pieces of electronic dub or psychedelic rock. They edited their first 12″ in 2006 under London’s Living Records. That marked the beginning of a growing wave of interest in their sound, which in turn lead into more releases and playing at some of the most exciting dance-floors and clubs in Paris and London, sharing the booth with the likes of James Murphy, Dirty Soundsystem, Andy Blake, Slam, Brodinski among others. Photonz are also a part of the vibrant underground Lisbon scene. Apart from their residency at Lounge, they’re also an integral part of the ZONK and Dig we Must collectives, also playing often at Lux. Their releases for 2010 include 12″s for Republic of Desire, Get The Curse Music, two remixes for Anthony “SHAKE” Shakir, their own label One Eyed Jacks and a couple of other projects of their own.
